Marijuana Eradication

There is no question that the debate on marijuana continues. But, regardless of where one stands on the issue, we can all agree that children should not be exposed to marijuana.Ê Smoking of any substance is a health risk and our collective society has ruled that marijuana is an illegal substance.

Marijuana can be grown most anywhere and just about every year the department eradicates a patch of marijuana within our jurisdiction. You can help us tremendously in our efforts in protecting our children by assisting the department in the location of marijuana plants.

From our past finds of marijuana growing in our community, the following information is gleamed. Generally, the plants are started indoors and then transplanted after the full moon in May (May 7th this year). Mostly likely, the crops will be planted on the property of another. However, we have found marijuana growing on people's porch, in their houses and yards.

Our wooded hills and swampy areas provide ample conditions for growing marijuana as do the abandoned farm lands in the area. Areas of recent logging operations provide an excellent opportunity for growing the illegal crop. A number of grows have been discovered near streams and rivers, especially in the marshy area that surrounds bodies of water.

At most of our major finds, we have observed the marijuana planted in groups of 4-5 plants spread over an acreage of several acres. We have found plots of many plants grouped together and in other finds, huge single plants. Sunny exposure is a big plus for the plants, however, we have found grows where sunshine has been sacrificed for concealment.

What to look for? Follow footpaths or OHRV trails that lead into vegetative growth or in those areas along streams. Many times growers leave behind plant containers, fertilizer, five-gallon pails, garden tools, wire screening and other items associated with plant cultivation. Some grow areas have fallen trees or brush clearing to allow sunlight onto the marijuana plants. More than anything else, check the environment and ask yourself what is out of place or why do we have a human presence in this remote location.

If you should see strangers in remote areas or people carrying water, soil, plants, tools or fertilizer in remote areas, give us a call.

The color of the marijuana plant is a pale green that appears to be out of place in our terrain. On closer look, you may observe a different color and texture of the soil from the fact that the plant was transferred from a pot.

If you even suspect that marijuana is being grown at a particular location, please give us a call at 632-7501. Remember, the town covers a large rural area and it is absolutely necessary to have specific to the point directions. All information obtained will be labeled CONFIDENTIAL.
